FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3 p.m. - January 22, 2005
NORWICH The Chenango County Emergency Management Office in conjunction with the Chenango County Sheriffs Office and the Chenango County Department of Public Works has issued a Travel Advisory in effect until 12 noon Sunday. This means that hazardous driving conditions exist and no unnecessary travel should take place.
Heavy snow has already fallen over Chenango County and numerous accidents have been reported throughout the day. Travel conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate later this afternoon and evening.
As weather conditions deteriorate, motorists are urged to reach their destinations as soon as possible and remain off the roadways until conditions improve on Sunday. All State, County and Local Highway Departments will be making every attempt to keep the roadways open. Drivers should remove all vehicles from roads to aid in snow removal.
This is a potentially dangerous winter storm. The latest information from the National Weather Service in Binghamton advises that snowfall amounts may reach 12 to 18 inches by Sunday morning. Winds will increase this evening to 15-25 mph causing significant blowing and drifting of snow and white-out conditions. Temperatures will decrease to the single digits wind-chill temperatures may reach near -20 degrees. Winds will continue overnight and will begin to decrease Sunday afternoon.
