WEATHER/NEWS BULLETIN
Attention Norwich Residents:
There is a significant threat of flooding this afternoon, into tomorrow, along the Canasawacta Creek and Chenango River. Over 2 inches of rain has fallen since midnight at the City/County Emergency Operations Center in Norwich. Most of that precipitation came down in less than a one-hour period, around noon today.
A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Chenango County until 2:30 p.m. today.
A River Flood Warning is in effect for the Chenango River. The Chenango River is expected to reach flood stage this evening or overnight.
The rain that is falling is forecast to continue through at least Wednesday. The National Weather Service reports the rain will move repeatedly over the same areas as the storms move from south to north. Another system will approach the area tonight, bringing another round of heavy rain to the area. Any additional rainfall, beyond what we have had at this point, will quickly runoff into area streams and creeks, which could overflow their banks.
Here are some flood safety tips:
Driving Flood Facts
The following are important points to remember when driving in flood conditions:
Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars
causing loss of control and possible stalling.
A foot of water will float many vehicles.
Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including
sport utility vehicles (SUV?s) and pick-ups.
