PRESS RELEASE
NORWICH – A State of Emergency has been declared in the City of Norwich due to widespread flooding. Over a third of the City’s streets were closed overnight because of flooding on the Canasawacta Creek. A State of Emergency is also in effect for Chenango County. All roads in both the City and County are closed until further notice.
East Main Street and State Highway 12 in the City are impassable, as are a number of side streets.
“This is a very dangerous situation and people need to heed the warnings of emergency officials,” said City Mayor Joseph Maiurano.
A number of evacuations have taken place and more are expected over the next few hours. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Gibson Elementary School on Newton Ave. in Norwich.
“This is significantly worse than the record flood we experienced just last April,” said Emergency Management Director A. Wesley Jones. “We’ve been advised by the National Weather Service to expect the worst case scenario.
"While the threat of flash flooding along the Canasawacta Creek has diminished, we are expecting more flooding on the east side of the City as the river continues to top its banks."
Highway Department vehicles were utilized overnight to assist in evacuating people from streets in which other vehicles, including fire apparatus, can not reach.
